This year marked a significant milestone for the This is Our Dream Cultural Compact with West Coast Eagles formally committing as a signatory, signalling their commitment to working in different ways in Newman.
The Cultural Compact, signed by Nyiyaparli and Martu leaders in 2021, aims to lay down new foundations to walk together for a better future for all in Newman.
It aims to help signatories operate their businesses and organisations in ways that are inclusive and respectful of Nyiyaparli and Martu culture and people.
The West Coast Eagles have had a long history in the Pilbara and last year, appointed a full-time engagement officer to Newman who works to deliver weekly activities that promote healthy lifestyles, community and fun.
In signing the Cultural Compact, West Coast Eagles invited representatives from Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation, Jamukurnu Yapalikurnu Aboriginal Corporation, Newman Futures and BHP to their headquarters in Perth, where guests were treated to a tour of their epic facilities.
KNAC chairperson Keith Hall said he was proud to see West Coast become a signatory.
“The relationship between Nyiyaparli and Martu has been working for a long time, this shows how we work together in Newman and it will show a better understanding of how we can walk forward together,” he said.
“The main focus having West Coast on board is having them show our younger generations how they can be involved.”
JYAC representative Olivia Wilson said it was particularly important for young people to see West Coast making this commitment.
“I think it is a really great partnership that will be around for years to come and it will make a really great impact on future generations.”
West Coast Eagles join 40 other signatories who have committed to working together to create positive change in Newman.
After checking in with signatories, we know that many organisations have adopted new practices like introducing Acknowledgements of Country into their daily work and implementing cultural awareness training for employees.
We look forward to working with all of our Cultural Compact signatories in the new year to find new pathways to work together.
