This is Our Dream

Signatory Response Statement

We recognise Nyiyaparli and Martu sovereignty of their lands in the East Pilbara and Central Western Desert regions, an unbroken connection, inherited from ancestors and stretching back for more than 40,000 years.

We acknowledge that Newman and Jigalong are Nyiyaparli country and that Martu join with Nyiyaparli in upholding Aboriginal traditions and culture in Jigalong.

We are profoundly thankful to Nyiyaparli and Martu for naming, caring for and being custodians of landscapes, language, culture and law. This rich heritage enriches and enlivens our collective lives, communities, organisations and economies.

We thank Nyiyaparli and Martu for the invitation offered in the “This is Our Dream” statement and we wholeheartedly accept this invitation to “improve Nyiyaparli country”, “to follow and listen to this story” and “to lay down new foundations and walk together.”

We are serious about committing to this journey with “Martu and Nyiyaparli, to travel together to a shared future.”

The This Is Our Dream Cultural Compact acknowledges the Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners of the Country on which Newman stands and the Martu People as the Custodians of Jigalong which sits in Nyiyaparli Country. We respect and recognise their leaders, past, present and emerging, and we are grateful for the privilege of living and working on this Country.
