Our Dream

In June 2020 Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation (KNAC) and the Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation (WDLAC), supported by Newman Futures, came together to develop the Ngaa Ngayunkarnu Kapukurri.

The This Is Our Dream Cultural Compact, maps a new pathway of mutual respect for the town. It is a vision for upholding Aboriginal culture and traditions in Newman catalysing collaboration, unity, understanding and respect of Aboriginal values and encouraging local businesses and institutions to commit to more culturally responsive approaches

Our People

Newman Futures is a partnership project between BHP, the Shire of East Pilbara and the Department of Communities that brings stakeholders and community together to build a diverse and sustainable economy that is inclusive to all.

Working with the Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation (KNAC) and the Western Lands Aboriginal Corporation (WDLAC) we’ve come together to develop the Ngaa Ngayunkarnu Kapukurri – This Is Our Dream Cultural Compact.

Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation 

Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation (KNAC) is the Native Title representative group for the Nyiyaparli People, the Traditional Owners of approximately 36,684 square kilometres of land and waters in the East Pilbara region, including the township of Newman, Western Australia.

Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation 

Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation is the prescribed body corporate for the Martu people of the central Western Desert region in Western Australia. Their lands include the Percival Lakes and Pilbara regions in Western Australia. Today, approximately 2500 Martu live in and around their determination area including within their established communities at Jigalong, Punmu, Parnngurr (Cotton Creek) and Kunawarritji (Well 33).

The This Is Our Dream Cultural Compact acknowledges the Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners of the Country on which Newman stands and the Martu People as the Custodians of Jigalong which sits in Nyiyaparli Country. We respect and recognise their leaders, past, present and emerging, and we are grateful for the privilege of living and working on this Country.
