Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry sign the Cultural Compact

The Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is one of many organisations who have recently signed the This is Our Dream Cultural Compact.

The Cultural Compact invites every person, street, community and organisation to join the movement to grow together. To “travel together to a shared future” with Nyiyaparli and Martu on a journey of mutual respect, inclusive decision-making and increased access to opportunities.

NCCI business development manager Kahu Raharuhi said it was an important step in acknowledging Nyiyaparli and Martu people and raising cultural awareness.

“I believe that we need to work together by acknowledging the people of this land,” she said.

“I am Indigenous to New Zealand and I feel this type of recognition is in line with respect, cultural awareness and an opportunity to move forward in the right way.”

Kahu said she would encourage all other Newman businesses to sign the Cultural Compact because it is about standing with Indigenous people and collaborating for a better future.

“I feel like it will enable businesses to show respect to the people of this land. It will also streamline our use of Acknowledgement to Country that is endorsed by its people.

“The Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry will show its commitment as signatories to the Cultural Compact by opening every meeting and Chamber event with the Acknowledgement to Country that the Martu and Nyiyaparli people have endorsed.”

The This Is Our Dream Cultural Compact acknowledges the Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners of the Country on which Newman stands and the Martu People as the Custodians of Jigalong which sits in Nyiyaparli Country. We respect and recognise their leaders, past, present and emerging, and we are grateful for the privilege of living and working on this Country.
