Cultural Awareness Training in Newman

In signing the Cultural Compact, we encourage you to participate in Martu and Nyiyaparli cultural awareness experiences and further your knowledge about the Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners of the Country on which Newman stands and the Martu People as the Custodians of Jigalong which sits in Nyiyaparli Country.

The following local organistaions offer Cultural Awareness Training in the Pilbara:

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ), a Martu organisation based in Newman that works with Martu to build strong sustainable communities, offers a Cultural Awareness Program uniquely focused on Martu people and their history, culture, society and challenges. The sessions are practical, drawing on familiar ideas, aimed to be entertaining and provide variety to sustain interest. They are delivered using a range of techniques:

  • group work 
  • personal stories; and 
  • small-group discussions. 
  • question and answer
  • audio-visual presentations 
  • films and maps

Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre is a leading Aboriginal language and resource centre working with people in the Pilbara to record and foster Aboriginal languages, culture and history. 

Wangka Maya offers Cultural Awareness Training in an informal relaxed atmosphere with short presentations and time to ask questions. 

Some topics covered throughout the session include:

  • Aboriginal Culture, including skin groups, storytelling and languages. 
  • History of the Pilbara
  • Communication styles
  • Working with Aboriginal people

 The session will also include:

  • Workbooks and materials
  • Lunch and morning tea
